• The Tanks: The History of the Royal Tank Regiment, 1976-2017

The Royal Tank Regiment celebrates its centenary this year (2017). This, the fourth volume of the Regiment’s history, begins in the midst of the Cold War, with the four RTR regiments mainly based in Germany. They experienced NATO’s rearmament in the early 1980s and the implementation of General Sir Nigel Bagnall’s revolutionary new concept for the defense of the NATO Central Region. The Troubles in Northern Ireland were also at the height and the RTR served there on numerous occasions. In addition, the Regiment saw service with the United Nations in Cyprus. The Berlin Wall came down at the end of 1989, signaling the end of the Cold War. Yet, President Bush’s New World Order proved anything but. Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait resulted in the First Gulf War, in which the Regiment played its part in many ways. However, the so called Peace Dividend meant that the RTR was reduced just two regiments. Then came the horrors of the civil war in former Yugoslavia, in which the Regiment also became involved. While it did operate in tanks in Kosovo, it was also demonstrating its versatility in many other roles in this increasingly uncertain time. Not least was the formation the Joint NBC Regiment, made up of 1 RTR and the RAF Regiment. The RTR was at the forefront of the assau...

  • 50th Royal Tank Regiment: The Complete Story

"... a fine tribute to a great regiment and I can commend it to prospective readers, specially military historians. I doubt whether there has ever been such a through and detailed record of any Territorial Regiment." From the Foreword by Colonel V.J. Senior, MC Inspired by the research that he carried out into the death of his grandfather whilst serving in the 50RTR, and the conversations with the old soldiers who had served with him, the author set about collecting the memories of those veterans. This book, the result of his research, takes the form of personal accounts, details from the regimental war diary and descriptions of the many battles in which they partook. 50RTR was formed in Bristol in April 1939 and disbanded only seven years later. In that short period, the regiment gained itself a reputation and a record that has not been equalled: 50RTR were in contact with enemy for 95% of their overseas service, for instance. They saw action in the Western Desert and North Africa, including El Alamein, Mareth and Sfax, and then Sicily, Italy and Athens. A moving introduction is provided by Brigadier HBC Watkins, MBE, himself an officer in the RTR for 34 years. He describes the book as 'most remarkable' and the battle descriptions as being 'excellent and must be of the greate...

  • Jake Wardrop's Diary: A Tank Regiment Sergeant's Story

The personal story of a British tank sergeant's war, from the fall of France in 1940, through the bloody campaigns against Rommel's forces in North Africa, the hard-fought drive up Italy, D-Day and the battles for France and the low countries, and the invasion of the German heartland itself. George Forty, himself a veteran of the Korean War, uses Jake Wardrop's war diary as the basis for this first-hand tale of bravery. For the first time in its entirety, Jack Wardrop's tale is told, from defeat in 1940 to ultimate victory in 1945. Sadly, despite his bravery, Jake Wardrop was killed in action during the dying days of the war. His diary is a reminder of the vicious fighting his, and the other tanks of 5 Royal Tank Regiment, took part in and it gives a unique personal insight into the Second World War. Wardrop's detailed record of each battle and action was compiled at the time and it has long remained in the possession of his mother, who was sent extracts from time to time as the war progressed. His diary serves as an exciting battlefield record of 5RTR.
