• History of Modern Art, 6th Edition

Long considered the survey of modern art, this engrossing and liberally illustrated text traces the development of trends and influences in painting, sculpture, photography and architecture from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. Retaining its comprehensive nature and chronological approach, it now comes thoroughly reworked by Elizabeth Mansfield, an experienced art historian and writer, with refreshing new analyses, a considerably expanded picture program, and a more absorbing and unified narrative.

  • Reading American Art

This anthology brings together twenty outstanding works of recent scholarship on the history of the visual arts in the United States from the colonial period to 1945. The selected essays―all written within the past two decades―reflect the interdisciplinary character of current art historiography in America and the variety of approaches that contribute to the dynamism in the field. The authors take up diverse subjects―from colonial portraits to nineteenth-century sculptures of women to photographic images of New York―and invite those with a general knowledge of the history of American art to think more deeply about art and culture.Employing many interpretive methodologies, including iconology, social history, structuralism, psychobiography, and feminist theory, the contributors to this volume combine close analysis of specific art objects or groups of objects with discussion of how these works of art operated within their cultural contexts. The authors consider the works of such artists as John Singleton Copley, Charles Willson Peale, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Jackson Pollock as they assess how paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and photographs have carried meaning within American society. And they investigate how the conceptualization, pro...

  • Chaos, Territory, Art: Deleuze and the Framing of the Earth (The Wellek Library Lectures)

Instead of treating art as a unique creation that requires reason and refined taste to appreciate, Elizabeth Grosz argues that art-especially architecture, music, and painting-is born from the disruptive forces of sexual selection. She approaches art as a form of erotic expression connecting sensory richness with primal desire, and in doing so, finds that the meaning of art comes from the intensities and sensations it inspires, not just its intention and aesthetic.By regarding our most cultured human accomplishments as the result of the excessive, nonfunctional forces of sexual attraction and seduction, Grosz encourages us to see art as a kind of bodily enhancement or mode of sensation enabling living bodies to experience and transform the universe. Art can be understood as a way for bodies to augment themselves and their capacity for perception and affection-a way to grow and evolve through sensation. Through this framework, which knits together the theories of Charles Darwin, Henri Bergson, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, and Jakob von Uexküll, we are able to grasp art's deep animal lineage. Grosz argues that art is not tied to the predictable and known but to new futures not contained in the present. Its animal affiliations ensure that art is intensely political and charged ...

  • Beauty and Art: 1750-2000 (Oxford History of Art)

What do we mean when we call a work of art "beautiful"? How have artists responded to changing notions of the beautiful? Which works of art have been called beautiful, and why? Fundamental and intriguing questions to artists and art lovers, but ones that are all too often ignored in discussions of art today. Elizabeth Prettejohn argues that we simply cannot afford to ignore these questions. Charting over two hundred years of western art, she illuminates the vital relationship between our changing notions of beauty and specific works of art, from the works of Kauffman to Whistler, Ingres to Rosetti, Cezanne to Pollack. Beautifully illustrated with 100 photographs--60 in full color--Beauty and Art concludes with a challenging question for the future: Why should we care about beauty in the twenty-first century?

  • Cleopatra (1963) Original German Roadshow 23x33 Poster Folded Very Fine Condition ELIZABETH TAYLOR REX HARRISON RICHARD BURTON Art by HOWARD TERPNING Film Directed by JOSEPH L. MANKIEWICZ

Original 20th Century-Fox Roadshow German 23x33 poster for the Joseph L. Mankiewicz historical epic, CLEOPATRA (1963) starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Rex Harrison. Originally this film was supposed to be two three hour movies-- the first dealing with Caesar and Cleopatra and the second with Antony and Cleopatra. But Fox, reeling from the exorbitant cost overruns associated with this budgetary debacle, decided to release one four hour movie instead. The result of this unfortunate decision is a spectacular film - spectacular in a way that digital effects cannot hope to match - with a less than satisfying narrative. Elizabeth Taylor's original contract stipulated that she was to be paid 1 million. But after a lengthy 50 million lawsuit brought by the studio against Burton and Taylor and then a countersuit by Taylor, the studio finally settled with the actress for 7 million. The campaign art for the posters for this film were done by Howard Terpning. Two different images were produced. One was the famous couch scene and the other was this throne room tableau. The film was so famous at the time that some posters produced for the film did not included the title of the film on the poster. This is one such poster, the German 23x33, folded, and in very fine condition. Movie...
